Good morning, crowd. โ˜•

Quick game before we start. ๐ŸŽฏ

Anthropic's leaked filing shows about $4.6 billion in 2025 revenue. How much did it lose that year?

๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธ $4.2 billion
๐Ÿ…ฑ๏ธ $12 billion
๐Ÿ…ฒ๏ธ $42 billion

Hold that thought. The answer is in story #1.

๐Ÿ“‹ Today's 60-second summary

  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Anthropic meets IPO investors tomorrow as talk of a $1.8Tโ€“$2T valuation builds

  • ๐Ÿ“‰ย OpenAI's revenue just shrank on paper: about $50B annualized, not the $70B that was reported

  • ๐Ÿ›’ย Amazon is in talks to buy Decart for ~$7B, weeks after Anthropic walked away at $6B

  • ๐Ÿš€ย TypeSafe raised $870M at a $7.5B valuation, 24 days after its $40M seed

  • ๐Ÿฆย Lenders want ~11% to fund a $5B AI data center loan, and commitments are due tomorrow

Cities Are Running Out of Salt Before Winter Even Starts

Road salt is one of those things nobody thinks about until plow trucks come back empty, and this year that's happening before the first snowfall. Some cities haven't gotten a single bid for winter supply, while others are paying nearly double last year's price.ย

North America doesn't mine enough of its own, which is why it ships in 8 to 10 million tonnes from places like Egypt and Chile, two weeks away by boat.

is building a mine in Newfoundland near a deepwater port where ships can reach Boston in three days. With salt, the real cost is in shipping, and CEO Nolan Peterson says the difference is so big that overseas producers could give their salt away and still come out more expensive than Atlas. The project is shovel-ready and projected to generate roughly C$188 million a year in free cash flow.

THE BIG STORY

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Anthropic's $2 Trillion Test Starts Tomorrow

Gizmodo

โšก TL;DR

  • Anthropic hosts a pre-IPO investor day at its San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday, October 14

  • The roadshow could start the week of November 9, with trading possibly before Thanksgiving

  • Investors are discussing a fair value of $1.8 trillion to $2 trillion, about double its May valuation

Anthropic's IPO is moving from rumor to calendar. Invitations went out to a select group of institutional investors for a session at its San Francisco headquarters tomorrow, where they can question executives directly.

According to Bloomberg, the formal roadshow could start as early as the week of November 9, and shares could begin trading before Thanksgiving (November 26). That's about a month later than the October date floated earlier. The company reportedly expects the offering to match or beat SpaceX's in size.

๐Ÿง ย Quiz answer: it's ๐Ÿ…ฒ๏ธ, about $42 billion. But read the fine print: more than $34 billion of that came from accounting charges tied to changes in the fair value of its debt. The operating loss was a bit over $8 billion.

๐Ÿ”ข The numbers (from the leaked filing):

  • $1.8Tโ€“$2T: the valuation range investors are discussing

  • $965B: Anthropic's valuation in May 2026

  • $4.6B: 2025 revenue, up from $386M in 2024 (about 12x)

  • ~435x: a $2T price divided by 2025 revenue

  • ~25%: share of revenue from just two customers

  • $500B+: planned spending on computing infrastructure in the coming years

Here's the thing. Nobody will pay $2 trillion for last year's revenue. The bet is on how fast this year's revenue keeps compounding, and tomorrow's meeting is where management has to prove it. The customer concentration and the compute bill are the two questions every serious investor will ask.

We broke down the full leaked filing here.

๐ŸŽฏ What to do with this:

  • Pre-IPO and secondary investors: the IPO price sets the mark for every AI lab's private shares, OpenAI included. If you hold AI secondaries, this listing will reprice your position, up or down.

  • Public market investors: don't chase day one. As SpaceX showed this summer, a giant IPO can pop, then fall by half before it recovers.

  • Founders building on Claude: a public Anthropic reports every quarter. Expect more predictable pricing, and more pressure on margins.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ POLL: Would you buy Anthropic at a $2T valuation?

  • ๐Ÿš€ Yes, it's the next decade's platform

  • โณ Only after the first earnings report

  • ๐Ÿซง No, ~435x revenue is a bubble

๐Ÿ“‰ OpenAI's $20 Billion Revenue Gap

The Street

โšก TL;DR

  • The FT reports OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was nearing $50B at the end of September

  • Reuters and Axios had reported a figure close to $70B just a week earlier

  • Meanwhile OpenAI shipped GPT-6 to every ChatGPT user and passed Anthropic in developer spend on OpenRouter

On September 29, Reuters and Axios reported that OpenAI's annualized revenue was approaching $70 billion. On October 8, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI had told investors the number was nearing $50 billion. That's a $20 billion gap in nine days.

OpenAI's side: a person close to the company called the $70 billion figure "in the right ballpark." Some industry watchers called the FT story a simple misunderstanding over definitions. That's exactly the point.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ SPOT THE RED FLAG: "annualized revenue" usually means one recent month ร— 12. Pick a strong month, or count revenue differently, and the number jumps. It isn't audited, and it isn't what a company actually collected over a year.

๐Ÿ”ข The numbers:

  • ~$50B vs ~$70B: the two annualized revenue figures in circulation

  • $36B: OpenAI's own forecast for full-year 2026 revenue, per a presentation the FT reviewed

  • $278B: cumulative projected cash burn through 2030, per the same presentation

  • $852B: the valuation of its $122B raise in March

  • ~$1.4T: the valuation it's reportedly seeking for a new raise of at least $30B

  • 28x vs 20x: that $1.4T divided by $50B vs $70B

The product side tells a different story. On October 7, OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 across ChatGPT: "Sol" for paid plans and "Luna" for free users, plus a new Intelligent UI that answers with charts, buttons and forms instead of only text. And OpenRouter data showed OpenAI passing Anthropic in weekly developer token spend for the first time since February 2024, helped by price cuts.

The private markets angle: OpenAI already pushed its IPO to 2027 (our breakdown). With Anthropic listing first, OpenAI's private valuation will be measured against a public, audited competitor for the first time.

๐ŸŽฏ What to do with this:

  • Investors: whenever you see "ARR" or "run-rate" in a pitch, ask for trailing 12-month revenue too. If the founder can't give it, that's your answer.

  • Founders: define your revenue metric in writing and use it the same way every time. A $20B "misunderstanding" at OpenAI is a credibility crisis at a Series A company.

DEALS

๐Ÿ›’ Amazon Wants Decart for $7B. Anthropic Passed at $6B.

Tech Funding News

โšก TL;DR

  • The WSJ reports Amazon is in talks to buy AI startup Decart for about $7 billion

  • That's about a 75% premium to the ~$4B valuation Decart raised at in May

  • Anthropic walked away from a ~$6B deal in September after due diligence

Most people have never heard of Decart. Amazon may be about to pay $7 billion for it, and it's the third giant to try.

๐Ÿงฉ What Decart does:

  • Its main product, the Decart Optimization Stack (DOS), lets developers run AI workloads on Nvidia GPUs, Google TPUs or Amazon's Trainium chips without rebuilding for each one

  • It also builds its own models: Lucy edits live video in real time, and Oasis generates interactive virtual worlds

  • Founded in 2023 by Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, with headquarters in San Francisco and a development center in Tel Aviv

๐Ÿ“ˆ The valuation path:

  • Dec 2024: $32M raised at a $500M+ valuation

  • May 2026: ~$300M at nearly $4B, led by Radical Ventures, with Nvidia among the investors

  • Aug 2026: Nvidia's acquisition offer is reportedly topped by another bidder

  • Sept 2026: Anthropic walks away from a ~$6B deal after due diligence. Israeli outlet Globes reported the founders refused to move much of the team from Tel Aviv to San Francisco

  • Oct 2026: Amazon in talks at ~$7B

Here's why Amazon cares. Nvidia's real moat is CUDA, the software developers write for its chips. Moving AI work to other chips usually takes months of engineering. Decart's software shrinks that, which could push more customers onto Amazon's own Trainium chips. Decart already moved its models to Trainium, and at AWS re:Invent last December, Amazon said Decart ran real-time video 4x faster at half the cost of GPUs.

There's a precedent. In 2015, Amazon reportedly paid about $350 million for Annapurna Labs. That team went on to design Trainium.

The open question: Decart hasn't disclosed revenue. Globes reports it has been profitable almost from the start, but CTech reports the business is far smaller than the price being discussed.

๐ŸŽฏ What to do with this:

  • Founders: Decart sold a bridge, not a model. When every giant wants to escape someone else's ecosystem, the company that makes switching easy becomes a strategic asset.

  • Founders, part two: walking away from a $6B offer over team location only works with other bidders. Never run a sale process with one buyer.

  • Investors: strategic buyers pay for what a startup does to their business, not for its revenue. That's how a $4B company gets a $7B offer five months later.

๐Ÿš€ $40M Seed to $870M Series A in 24 Days

TypeSafe AI

โšก TL;DR

  • TypeSafe AI raised $870M at a $7.5B valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz

  • Its $40M seed, led by DCVC, was announced on September 15

  • Its model, Jev, gives software structured decisions instead of paragraphs of text

On September 15, TypeSafe announced a $40 million seed. On October 9, Bloomberg reported an $870 million Series A at a $7.5 billion valuation. Sequoia and DCVC joined a16z, and a16z's Martin Casado is taking a board seat.

๐Ÿค– What Jev is:

  • A "System One" model built for fast, structured decisions. It returns typed values with confidence scores that software can use directly, not text a human has to read

  • $0.042 per million input tokens, with output tokens free. TypeSafe says other models charge $0.20 to $10

  • Response times of 70 to 500 milliseconds

  • Named after economist William Stanley Jevons: when intelligence gets dramatically cheaper, people use far more of it

  • CEO Diogo Almeida previously worked on instruction-following research at OpenAI

Now the caveats. TypeSafe says a third of the Fortune 500 use Jev, but it hasn't named them. Its speed and cost claims come from its own tests. And Microsoft launched a model at the same price on the same day, so the price alone isn't a moat.

Here's the pattern. The fastest rounds of 2026 go to teams with frontier-lab experience and a sharp product idea, and seed, Series A and Series B are now separated by weeks, not years. That makes the seed check the only one most people can still get into.

๐ŸŽฏ What to do with this:

  • Angel and seed investors: if you're in a seed round with an ex-frontier-lab team, negotiate pro-rata rights up front. Without them you can't buy more when the A comes 24 days later.

  • Founders: "cheaper, faster, structured" is a pitch any enterprise buyer understands. Price is a feature, but you need something else people can't copy.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ POLL: Is $7.5B for a weeks-old product smart or crazy?

  • ๐Ÿง  Smart, cheap AI decisions are a huge market

  • ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Crazy, Microsoft just matched the price

  • ๐Ÿคท Too early to tell

FOLLOW THE MONEY

๐Ÿฆ The 11% AI Loan: Lenders Push Back

โšก TL;DR

  • JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs are selling a $5B loan for Volta, an AI cloud company founded this year

  • Investors pushed back, so the price went up: from SOFR + 500 to SOFR + 625โ€“650, an ~11.2%โ€“11.75% yield

  • Commitments are due tomorrow, October 14

Volta Infrastructure Holdings is less than a year old. It was founded in 2026 by former Brookfield infrastructure executives Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, raised $300M at a $2.4B valuation from a16z, Altimeter, Nvidia and Michael Dell, and signed a six-year, $10B compute deal with Anthropic.

Now it needs to borrow $5 billion to deliver.

๐Ÿ”ข The loan:

  • $3.7B for roughly 36,000 Nvidia GPUs

  • $1.3B for a letter of credit backing a lease on a 121 MW data center campus in Norway, run with Bitdeer

  • August pitch: SOFR + 500 at a price of 98โ€“98.5

  • October relaunch: SOFR + 625โ€“650 at 97โ€“98

  • ~11.2%โ€“11.75%: all-in yield to maturity, a new high for this kind of deal

๐Ÿšฉ Why lenders want more:

  • Almost no operating history

  • No corporate guarantee behind the debt

  • Debt of about 105% of the GPUs' cost, once the lease is counted

  • A six-year customer contract against a much longer lease

Compare that with Anthropic itself, which borrowed through a $35B package backstopped by Broadcom at investment-grade rates. Same AI boom, very different cost of money. Bloomberg data show companies have borrowed about $625B for data centers and AI over the past two years, and the buildout is expected to cost close to $5 trillion by 2030.

This is the part of the AI boom most people don't see. The equity headlines are about trillion-dollar valuations. The debt markets are quietly asking: what happens to these GPUs if the customer leaves after year six?

๐ŸŽฏ What to do with this:

  • Investors in AI infrastructure: check who stands behind the debt. A big-tech or investment-grade guarantor means cheap money. A young "neocloud" means 11%, and more risk for its equity.

  • Founders: a signed contract with a famous customer gets you a meeting with lenders. It doesn't get you good terms on its own.

Decart makes software that lets AI models run on Nvidia, Google and Amazon chips without being rebuilt for each. The Wall Street Journal reported on October 11, 2026 that Amazon is in talks to buy it for about $7 billion, which could help push more AI work onto Amazon's Trainium chips.

How much did TypeSafe AI raise?

TypeSafe AI, the maker of the Jev decision model, raised $870 million at a $7.5 billion valuation in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Sequoia and DCVC, according to Bloomberg on October 9, 2026.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What This Week Tells Us

Every story today is about the price of certainty.

  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Anthropic is asking public investors to pay up to $2T for growth they can't fully see yet

  • ๐Ÿ“‰ OpenAI just learned that a revenue number nobody can audit can lose $20B in a week

  • ๐Ÿ›’ Amazon is paying a 75% premium for software that makes its chips easier to use

  • ๐Ÿš€ a16z paid $7.5B for a product that's weeks old, because waiting would cost more

  • ๐Ÿฆ And lenders, the people who only get their money back, are demanding 11%

When equity investors and lenders look at the same AI boom and price it this differently, pay attention to the lenders.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Your turn
