Tech's Having A Moment Again

By Jose Ruiz ยท ยท 6 min read

Hello everyone,

Jose here.

I hope you had a great weekend.

Sending you good energy your way.

Tuesday newsletter. Not "capital moved." Real stories.

  • Microsoft hit a $100B market cap increase in one quarter (fastest gain ever, no debate).

  • Apple's fighting AI companies in court while also building AI (the irony).

  • TikTok employees are unionizing mid-existential crisis.

  • And OpenAI's next model just leaked via GitHub, and it's supposedly way better than GPT-4.

This is the stuff that actually matters.

Let's keep it simple without the financial details.

FRESH NEWS

AI POWERED

๐Ÿ’ป MICROSOFT JUST DID SOMETHING INSANE (AND NO ONE NOTICED)

The actual story: Microsoft added $100B in market cap in a single quarter. That's not "Microsoft had a good quarter." That's "Microsoft is worth Apple now in stock gain alone."

What actually happened:

  • Market cap gain: $100B in 3 months (April-July 2026)

  • Reason: Copilot integration everywhere (Windows, Office, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Chrome)

  • User adoption: 200M+ people now using Copilot daily

  • Revenue impact: Enterprise licenses going from $20/user to $40/user

  • Competition response: Google panicking, Apple quietly launching AI, Meta confused about strategy

Why this matters way more than it seems: Every Microsoft app now has AI built in. You can't use Excel without seeing Copilot suggestions. You can't write emails without Copilot offering rewrites. You can't build presentations without Copilot drafting slides.

Microsoft didn't "add a feature." They changed how 300M+ office workers work every single day.

Jose's actual take: This is the moment enterprise software gets AI. Not as an add-on. As the default.

Companies that tried to sell "AI-powered" products are about to discover that Microsoft just made their product irrelevant. Why buy a $50/user AI tool when your employees already have it for free in Excel?

Microsoft won the AI war. Not OpenAI. Not Anthropic. Microsoft. Because they own the Office suite.

That changes everything about the startup landscape over the next 5 years.

LAWSUIT

โš–๏ธย APPLE SUED OPENAI, ANTHROPIC, AND GOOGLE. THEN LAUNCHED AI. THE IRONY IS INSANE.

The headline: Apple filed lawsuits against OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google alleging they used copyrighted material to train models. Simultaneously, Apple announced Apple Intelligence (their own AI). Released the same day.

What's actually happening:

  • Lawsuit claim: "You used Apple's copyrighted training data to build models without permission"

  • Apple Intelligence announcement: "Here's our AI. It's trained on... [redacted]."

  • Legal contradiction: Apple arguing AI companies need permission for training data, while building AI (presumably without asking everyone)

  • Market signal: Apple admitting AI is existential, had to build it, had to sue competitors too

The irony meter: "You're not allowed to use copyrighted data to train AI" + "Here's our copyrighted-trained AI" = contradiction that will take 5 years of lawsuits to unwind.

Jose's actual take: This is Apple doing what Apple always does: Copy competitors' homework, sue them for doing homework, then release your version and act as if you invented it.

The lawsuit will lose (fair use defense is strong), but it'll cost OpenAI/Anthropic $100M+ in legal fees. That's the goal. Delay competitors while Apple ships their version.

Classic Apple playbook.

NATIONAL LABOR

๐Ÿšจ TIKTOK EMPLOYEES JUST FILED TO UNIONIZE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS.

The real story: TikTok's U.S. workforce just filed to unionize (via National Labor Relations Board petition) on the same day leadership confirmed an October 5 deadline for either sale or shutdown.

What this actually means:

  • Timing: Unionization filing while company might not exist in 60 days

  • Message: "We don't trust management to protect us in exit negotiations"

  • Leverage: Union gets seat at acquisition table, protects employee equity/severance

  • Precedent: First time a tech company unionized during M&A crisis

  • Company response: TikTok's not acknowledging it (ignoring the crisis)

Why this is genius: Employees realized: "If this company sells or shuts down, management will extract as much as possible and leave us with nothing."

Unionization = "We have a voice in what happens next."

Jose's actual take: TikTok employees just forced themselves into the acquisition negotiation. Whether TikTok gets sold to Elon, or shut down, or sold to some mystery buyer, the union now has to be at the table.

That's actually a brilliant labor strategy. Use the crisis to get power.

Expect other tech employees to copy this. Crisis = opportunity to reorganize power.

๐Ÿš€ย QUICK HITS: EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAPPENED

Meta's AI just wrote 500K lines of codeย ๐Ÿ“ Generated code passes code review 8 out of 10 times. Engineers are terrified and productive simultaneously.

Figma raises $150M at $20B valuationย ๐ŸŽจ Design tool company is now worth more than most banks. Investors still pumping money into tools that "replace designers."

Threads finally hit 100M usersย ๐Ÿ“ฑ Meta's Twitter clone took 8 months to get where Twitter was in year 1. Not winning, but not dead either.

AWS Lambda now supports GPU inference โšก Serverless AI just got easier. Lambda is about to become the default for running models.

Anthropic opens London research labย ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Claude's now being built in three continents. "Build where talent is" just became corporate strategy.

Elon's xAI releases Grok-2 (free)ย ๐Ÿค– Free AI model on X platform. Immediate chaos. (This is fine.)

Google Workspace finally has offline AIย ๐Ÿ’พ You can now use AI in Docs/Sheets without internet. Google caught up to Microsoft Copilot.

GitHub Copilot hit 1 million paid users ๐Ÿ’ป Paid AI code assistant now has real revenue. Developers will pay for AI, actually.

Stability AI lays off 40% of workforceย ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Image generation company's losing to free tools. Maybe AI isn't infinitely valuable?

Adobe Creative Cloud hits $100/month subscriptionย ๐Ÿ’ธ Raised prices again. Designers are starting to look for alternatives seriously.

๐Ÿ’กย WHAT YOU SHOULD ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT

If you use Microsoft Office:

  • Your workflow just changed. Copilot is now in every app. Get good at prompting.

If you use Apple products:

  • Apple Intelligence is coming. It's going to be mid (compared to Claude/GPT-4) but integrated everywhere.

If you work in tech:

  • Your job is about to get weird. AI can write code now. Your edge is thinking, not typing.

If you're an indie AI developer:

  • Open-source models + your own GPU = better economics than paying OpenAI. Run locally.

If you're thinking about startups:

  • Standalone AI tools are dead. AI integrated into existing products is the only moat.

๐ŸŽฏย THE WEEK'S REAL STORY

It's not about who's winning AI. It's about AI becoming invisible.

Microsoft didn't announce "we built AI." They announced Copilot in Excel. Apple didn't announce "we're an AI company." They announced Apple Intelligence in iOS. Nvidia didn't announce "we're backing open-source." Gamers just preferred local models.

AI stopped being a thing you buy. It became a thing you use without thinking about it.

That's the inflection.

โ˜• HUNT ACCORDINGLY

Look for companies making AI invisible in existing workflows. Look for open-source model adoption (it's winning). Look for employee organizing (crisis = opportunity). Look for legal battles (about to explode). Look away from "standalone AI products" (they're dead).

The future is: boring software + invisible AI = everything changes.
