This Week's Tech: Apple's AI Machine. Oura's $16B. Shein's Markdown. NASA's Telescope.

Hello crowd,

Jose here.

Let’s celebrate, it is Saturday.

This week moved fast. Apple's leaning into AI locally. Oura's about to be huge. Shein's humbled. NASA's launching a telescope the size of a bus.

Let's break it down.

His Father Got Parkinson's. He Built Robots Instead.

Clint Brauer grew up on his family's Kansas farm. His dad sprayed the same chemicals every American farmer sprays. Years later: Parkinson's. Clint walked away from a tech career to build a different way. Today his company, , runs a patented fleet of autonomous bots that slice weeds with centimeter precision, day or night, herbicide-free.

FRESH NEWS

Apple

🍏 APPLE'S MAC MINI JUST BECAME AN AI WORKHORSE

The story: Apple just dropped its first new Mac mini in two years—and it's built for running AI models locally, not in the cloud.

The details:

  • New M6 chip (Apple's first 2nm processor) can run AI workloads up to 4x faster

  • M5 Pro version handles larger models entirely on-machine

  • Starts at $899. Preorders now. Ships Sept 22.

  • Mac mini can hold up to 64GB of unified memory (shared CPU/GPU access)

  • Apple now calls it the "leading desktop for always-on agentic computing"

Why it matters: Developers have been using Mac minis to run AI models locally for months (avoiding cloud costs). Apple noticed the demand and engineered for it. This is Apple's way of saying: "Run AI at home. Don't always send everything to the cloud." That's a serious positioning statement.

Health

💍 OURA RING IS GOING PUBLIC AT $16B (AND IT'S HUGE)

The story: Oura, the smart ring maker, is heading to a September IPO that could value it at north of $16B—turning a sleep-tracker startup into one of this year's biggest consumer-health companies.

The details:

  • IPO could raise up to $3B, valued at $16B+

  • Oura hit $11B valuation last year after raising $900M

  • 900 employees. 5M paid members (up from under 1.3M two years ago)

  • 80%+ member renewal rate (people keep paying)

  • New Ring 5 has predictive health software, women's health tracking, AI coaching

  • Competing with Whoop (hit $10B in March) on health data, not just fitness

Why it matters: Oura isn't a sleep tracker anymore. It's a personal health platform. Paid members = recurring revenue. Health data = moat. Whoop and Oura are proving wearables are moving upstream (from fitness gadgets to medical platforms). That's a real business model shift.

Fashion

👗 SHEIN'S IPO IS A 70% MARKDOWN FROM PEAK

The story: Shein, once valued at $98.2B, is finally going public, but at just $27B, a brutal reality check for the fast-fashion giant.

The details:

  • Targeting $27B valuation in a Hong Kong IPO (Sept 1)

  • Raising up to $1.77B at HK$47.60–HK$49.50 per share

  • Down 70% from $98.2B in 2022

  • Shein owes investors up to $3.5B in protections (nearly 2x what it's raising)

  • Growth slowed to 1.1%. Operating profit down 26%

  • U.S. tariffs killed the duty-free shipping model

  • Temu is now the real competitor

Why it matters: Shein's IPO is a comedown.

No hypergrowth story. No momentum. Just a company trying to raise capital while smaller (and cheaper). Temu's success shows there's still demand for ultra-cheap fashion. But Shein's moment as a unicorn darling is gone.

AI VIDEO

🔭 NASA'S LAUNCHING A TELESCOPE THAT SEES 100X WIDER THAN HUBBLE

The story: NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches Aug 30 on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, pairing Hubble's sharpness with a field of view 100x larger.

The details:

  • Launch: Aug 30 from Kennedy Space Center on SpaceX Falcon Heavy

  • Budget: ~$4.3B

  • Hubble-level infrared resolution but 100x+ wider field of view

  • Can survey sky 1,000x faster than Hubble

  • Will discover ~100K transiting planets + 1K+ via gravitational microlensing

  • Will map 1B+ galaxies and the dark matter between them

  • Will track tens of thousands of supernovae

Why it matters: Webb is the zoom lens. Roman is the wide-angle camera. It's built to turn rare discoveries into massive datasets. Dark energy's behavior is still unsolved. The universe's expansion rate is disputed. Roman could help answer those questions. Plus: finding cold, distant, free-floating planets changes how we think about planetary systems.

📊 THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER

  • Perplexity: $250M → $750M ARR in 6 months (200% growth)

  • Perplexity valuation: $20B → $30B+ (50% increase)

  • XPeng raising: $900M+ for robots

  • Apple foldable: Coming September 2026

  • Power crisis: Companies now acquiring power infrastructure

☕ HUNT ACCORDINGLY

This week showed us the future moving in multiple directions at once:

  • Apple's betting on local AI (not cloud)

  • Wearables are becoming health platforms (subscription revenue)

  • Fast fashion is slowing (Shein's collapse)

  • Space telescopes are answering cosmic questions

  • Everything's being regulated (TikTok, age bans, emissions)

The winners?

Companies that own infrastructure + subscriptions + defensible data.
