This Week's Winners & Losers.

By Mason Trinkner · · 5 min read

Good morning,

Jose here,

Thursday check-in.

Tuesday you got the raw news (Microsoft, Apple, TikTok, GPT-5, Nvidia).

Thursday we're ranking it.

Debating it.

And most importantly: asking what YOU actually think.

This week had clear winners and losers. But the real question isn't "who won?" It's "what does it mean for you building/investing/working in tech?"

Let's settle this together.

Read time: 4 mins

Don't Buy SpaceX Stock. Buy These 3 Instead.

The biggest IPO in history is live — $1.75T valuation, $135 open, $75B raised. And history says the retail investors who chase day-one hype are the ones who get burned.

The SpaceX run created thousands of new millionaires. But it wasn't the people buying at the open. It was the ones positioned early, in the names set to ride the wave.

Our analyst pinpointed 3 stocks positioned to ride the SpaceX wave — with entry guidance and price targets, a bonus 4th pick (the most undervalued name in the sector), and a 3-phase playbook for when to buy and when to sell.

Over 2,500 investors have already read the report.

🏆 THIS WEEK'S WINNERS
(RANKED BY ACTUAL IMPACT)

WINNERS

#1 MICROSOFT (No Debate)

Why: $100B market cap gain. Copilot in every Office app. Enterprise software just got AI, permanently.

The implication: Every startup building "AI-powered productivity tools" just became irrelevant. Microsoft owns this category now.

Your take: Does this change how you think about productivity startups? Reply and let us know.

Prediction: Microsoft enterprise revenue grows 30%+ next year. This is the biggest business impact of the week.

#2 OPEN-SOURCE AI COMMUNITY

Why: Nvidia gaming revenue beat data center. People prefer running Llama locally over paying OpenAI.

The implication: Open-source models just won the accessibility race. Commercial AI pricing doesn't make sense if local models work.

Your take: Are you using local open-source models or commercial APIs? Tell us why.

Prediction: Open-source model adoption accelerates 5x in next 6 months. This is THE inflection point.

#3 APPLE (But Accidentally)

Why: Sued AI companies for using training data, then launched Apple Intelligence. The irony makes them look clever.

The implication: Apple signaled "we're in AI" while also pressuring competitors with legal risk. Classic Apple playbook.

Your take: Does Apple's legal strategy bother you, or is it just smart business? Vote below.

Prediction: Apple Intelligence becomes table stakes. Doesn't beat Claude/GPT-4, but integration wins the race.

LOSERS

#1 STANDALONE AI STARTUPS

Why: Every AI startup built to "solve X with AI" just became irrelevant. The big 5 (Microsoft, Apple, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic) are integrating AI into their existing products.

The implication: Standalone AI is dead. AI integrated into existing workflows is the only game.

Your take: If you're building a standalone AI tool, what's your response? We want to hear it.

Prediction: 70% of standalone AI startups will pivot or shut down in the next 18 months.

#2 AI STARTUP FUNDING (Quietly)

Why: No one's announcing

AI startup funding anymore. Capital is flowing to infrastructure (Hadrian, Terafab) and integration (Microsoft, Apple).

The implication: The "AI startup bubble" just popped silently. Nobody noticed because the big companies' wins were louder.

Your take: Are you still raising for an AI startup? If so, what's your unfair advantage?

Prediction: AI startup fundraising drops 60% in next quarter. This is the signal.

#3 TIKTOK EMPLOYEES (Short-term)

Why: Unionizing mid-existential crisis. It's a smart strategy, but the company might not exist in 60 days.

The implication: Union power doesn't help if the company gets banned.

Your take: Smart or risky? Is unionizing mid-existential crisis genius or desperate? Vote.

Prediction: TikTok gets acquired or banned by October 5. Union gets seat at table but limited influence.

💡 3 QUESTIONS WE ACTUALLY WANT YOUR ANSWER TO

Question 1: Are Standalone AI Startups Dead?

This is the big one. We think 70% of "we built AI for X" startups are dead. But maybe we're wrong.

If you're building an AI startup: What's the unfair advantage that makes you NOT irrelevant?

Reply with: "I'm building [X] because [unfair advantage]."

Question 2: Should You Switch to Open-Source Models?

Nvidia's numbers suggest people are running Llama locally instead of paying OpenAI.

Are you considering this? What's holding you back? Cost? Reliability? Capability?

Reply with: "I'm [using/considering] open-source because [reason]"

Question 3: What Surprised You Most This Week?

We ranked the winners and losers. But maybe we missed something.

What story surprised you? What pattern did we miss? What's actually important that nobody's talking about?

Reply with: "The real story was [what surprised you]."

🎮 PLAY WITH US THIS WEEK

We're going to do something different Thursday (this email) than we normally do.

Normally, Thursday explains patterns. This Thursday we're asking YOU to help us understand patterns.

Three ways to play:

  1. Vote on debates: Reply with A/B/C/D votes

  2. Rank the week: Reply with your ranking of what mattered most

  3. Answer our questions: Reply with your actual thoughts on the 3 big questions

We read every reply. Jose personally responds to the best ones.

This is crowdsourcing. This is community. This is how we figure out what actually matters.

🏆 NEXT WEEK'S PLAN

Next Thursday we'll publish:

  • What you ranked as winners/losers

  • What surprised YOU most

  • How your takes differed from ours

  • The 3 best replies with responses

You build next week's newsletter with your input.

That's the goal here. Community intelligence beats individual intelligence.

☕ HUNT ACCORDINGLY

Think about these questions:

  • Which story actually impacts YOU?

  • Who's really winning this week?

  • What did we miss?

  • What's your unfair advantage if you're building?

Then reply.

Let's figure this out together.

Jose.
